Discovering a fantastic new look to be then let down that the wig doesn’t fit your head right is well…. can be a little disappointing to say the least.

Finding the style is only half of the puzzle completed, to really get the benefits of a natural looking wig, always start with the right wig cap.

Here in Australia (& same goes for NZ & UK) we find that most wig wearers have a smaller-than-industry-standard measurement.  In fact most of the time, these ladies need to get their wigs taken in, or always wear a wig gripper with their wigs just to keep the wig on as best they can.

Not ideal.

But help is here.   To ensure this doesn’t happen to you and your wig fits you properly, let’s guide you through how to measure your head.  You may be surprised to learn that you are in fact a petite size cap or even ultra petite!

FIND THE RIGHT CAP SIZE FOR YOU

First things first, the only way to find out which wig cap size is going to be the best fit for you is either by visiting a wig specialist or measuring your head at home using a measuring tape.

Follow the instructions on this chart and match your measurements to the table and discover which cap size you are.

A tip for measuring the Circumference of your head… Make sure your take the tape measure around your forehead, over your ears and under the bump at the back of your head like you see in the diagram to the left.

PETITE AND PETITE/PETITE AVERAGE

This is the sweet spot for most of our wig wearers here in Australia , Head circumference will measure between 20.5 – 22″.  It stands to reason this is why the Petite Wig Company has their wig cap size catering for this head circumference size.

The difference between wearing an Average size cap and wondering why your wig is not fitting your properly and wearing this cap size can be expedential.  With wearers who make the transition to a smaller cap size finding that the wig just feels right, more natural and sitting properly without any need to make adjustments to make it fit.

DOES IT MATTER WHAT DESIGN THE CAP IS?

Short answer is yes it does.  The saying ‘you pay for what you get’ is quite appropriate for explaining the difference in wig cap designs and why some wigs are more expensive than others.

To get a fit right though, it’s vital to have the right cap size, and preferrable to have a cap that is made to hug your head.

This isn’t to say other cap designs won’t work for you, however to experience that ‘fits like a glove’  feeling, the way a cap has been structured will make a difference and in some cases, can have you questioning why doesn’t my wig fit properly?

An ideal wig cap is one that has a monofilament top that allows multi-directional parting and a stretch moulded cap, this is secret to a firm fitting wig.  A lace front is also a big bonus as it does result in a more natural looking hairline.

WHAT ABOUT IF MY HEAD IS STILL SMALLER THAN PETITE?

Just as some wig wearers wear large wig cap sizes, on the other end of the scale, some wig wearers will be wearing an Ultra Petite wig cap size.

The Ultra Petite cap size caters for small head sizes and Child  cap size will enable a snug fitting result for wigs when fitting a wig for kids.

The tell tale signs will be the same as an average size for petite wig wearers.

  • The wig will not feel secure
  • May bag at the back and
  • There’s no tighter setting available for your velcro adjustable straps to go to.

If you’re experiencing the above, it  will mean you need an Ultra Petite sized wig.

In the industry, there is quite a limited selection of wigs made in Ultra Petite and for kids, sadly the wigs are generally too high density and not all that realistic.

We have some great news though!  Currently the Petite Wig Company is in development stages of a new Ultra Petite collection and styles for kids to wear too.  Good news for small heads 🙂
